http://www.ponamersundown.comPonamero Sundown....the name evokes images of kicking back at dusk among the saguaros, solarized coyotes singing in the distance, and little hallucinogenic cactus buttons writhing at your feet. Add in a squadron of perfectly synched fighter jets releasing smart bombs over your head, and you've pretty much got the sonic picture as far as these unrepentant Swedish desert rockers are concerned. God bless Sweden, land of the midnight fuzz! Although the SOK (Sound of Kyuss) has largely been abandoned in the land of its birth, it thankfully sails on in Sweden, which is good news for rockers everywhere.
According to the disc, 'Heavy Rock' is Ponamero Sundown's fourth demo. They've got it all: passionate, melodic vocals, crashing fuzzy distortion, galloping drums, huge production, melody and attitude in equal measure, and riffs, riffs, riffs. That pretty much says it all, and if you're like me, you can listen to tuneage like this for hours on end. Maybe the Ponamero dudes will have mercy, and send me their first three demos as well, heh heh. OK it's nothing new, but that's more than alright, 'cause for desert rockers who love tons of grooves with some nice 70s influence, leavened with just the right amount of Sabbathy doom as an anchor, it will do just perfectly, thanks. 'Black Widow' is a good example, showcasing the group's strengths: a straight-ahead desert rocker with powerful rolling riffs, a good combination of the old and ever-variable Kyuss + Sabbath equation. 'Hiding Inside' has some tasty wah, courtesy of guitarist Anders Martinsgard and some find percussive drumming, thanks to Peter Eklund, ex tub beater for Dark Funeral. 'Simple Man,' with it's quiet-before-the-storm beginning, showcases the strong, melodic vocals of Nicke Engwall, and Ola Nilsson keeps every song together with doses of in-the-pocket bass.
At this stage of the game it's probably not necessary to trot out the usual musical suspects for comparison purposes. I've already used the K-word, and that's probably enough, anyway. Without having a single label release, Ponamero Sundown already has the chops and maturity to be signed to any fuzz-oriented label. How about a split with Asteroid or Truckfighters? These guys are ready.
